FAQ

Why go to EatRight Ireland?

EatRight Ireland is owned and managed by Aoife Hanna, a state registered dietitian. Dietitians are the only health care professionals that are qualified to give individual nutritional advice. A practicing dietitian must be registered with the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute and thus have standards and qualities they must adhere to. Unfortunately, this is unlike nutritionists, who have no professional membership body to which they must register with. In other words, a registered dietitian is similar to a quality assurance logo – it means you’re getting the most qualified person to do the job!

What is a dietitian?

Dietitians are health care professionals that are legally able to assess, diagnose and provide dietary interventions to treat the individual or group. They must adhere to the guidelines set out by the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI) and CORU so as to maintain their title of ‘Dietitian’ or ‘Registered Dietitian’. Dietitians must adhere to the INDI code of ethics and professional practice.

What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

A dietitian has met the required education and training qualifications needed to register with the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI). They continue to maintain their skills and knowledge through engaging with continuous professional development, allowing them to continue to practice as a dietitian. As a member of the INDI, they are also held accountable for their conduct and the care they provide.
A ‘Nutritionist’ however, is not a protected title. This means that, irrespective of training, anyone who so wishes, can call themselves a nutritionist.

What to expect?

An initial consultation will usually last an hour. During this time, if indicated, body composition and anthropometric measurements may be taken. A full diet history is reviewed and advice will be tailored to your needs taking into account what you can manage and what’s medically appropriate.

I have health insurance, will that help?

Additionally, as Aoife is a member of the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute, consultation fees are approved by VHI Healthcare, Laya Healthcare, Aviva Health and Glo-Health. You will need to contact your health insurer for further details on their contribution towards the dietetic fee.

How often will I need to attend?

This will vary a lot depending on your needs. The initial consult will allow for a thorough assessment and adequate time for a dietary intervention. A client undertaking a low FODMAP diet should prepare for 3 appointments in total. For an athlete looking to improve their hydration techniques, one appointment may be all that is required. However, if they’re looking to learn about optimising their dietary intake for training, during and post exercise, this can take more than just one appointment.

I would like to see a dietitian, but not for any of reason listed on services. Can I still make an appointment?

Every client is different, and has individual needs. We recommend you contact us at info@eatrightireland.ie with your query. If Aoife feels she can help you, she will. If not, we will provide you with details on how to get the most appropriate dietetic input for your needs.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

A lot of people to attend EatRight Ireland are referred by their GP, but this isn’t essential. However, Aoife will ask you if you are happy that she corresponds with your GP following your appointments. If you want to make an appointment with Aoife and don’t have a GP referral – contact us on info@eatrightireland.ie

Do you take students for work experience?

Unfortunately EatRight Ireland is unable to provide students with any work experience opportunities. We recommend you contact your local hospital or the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute for further guidance on how to obtain dietetic work experience.
